A low cost solar powered absorption refrigeration system for developing countries – was the result of my graduation thesis. The aim was to find a system that had the potential to be low cost enough to make a substantial change in the base of the pyramid sector.
The solution proposed was an industrially producible system, that local craftsmen could adapt to the specific regional needs. A (working) prototype was build, as shown to the right. For the solar power collection phase, the product is placed in the sun (left) and for refrigeration, in the night, the product is taken inside and placed vertically, connected to a cool box, where the ice is stored.
Throughout the design process, not only all refrigeration technologies where reviewed and evaluated, but also solar collection methods and possible energy storage systems.
On the basis of this project we started the project Solarbear.
